The descent to the NOC wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be, but it was really long. One man told us it involved a lot of rock scrambles and both hand and feet action, but that really wasn’t the case. It was mostly switchbacks and actually quite gentle. I hiked down with Chrissy and Wing It, and we took our time because they both have slight knee problems that are aggravated by going downhill.
When we finally got to the NOC, it was too early to check into our room (I split a room with Chrissy and Wing It), so we met up with Pipe and Woodstock…and Toasted Toad! We chatted with him for a bit and then left our packs outside with him, and Pipe, Woodstock, Wing It, Chrissy, and I all went and grabbed lunch at the one restaurant in town. They didn’t have too many options for me, but I was able to get my fresh salad, so in the end I was happy.
After lunch we were finally able to check into our room. I showered almost immediately. Showering these days takes about a half hour or longer it seems. I’ve decided not to shave my legs for the duration of my hike, but despite this my showers still seem to last forever. There’s just so much dirt everywhere and it’s impossible to remove all of it, especially from underneath my nails, but I try every time, and I think this is what takes up all the time. Also, showers just feel so good and they’re so warm!
After we got cleaned up, we ventured back to town and did laundry. While we were waiting for our laundry, Twist and Oliver, Simba, Muffin Man, Beans, Boss, Mighty Blue, and Wiki all showed up. They’re staying in the hostel tonight. It was nice to see everyone again.
Chrissy and I grabbed dinner alone tonight and we devoured everything in sight. I think the hiker hunger has finally arrived!
When we got back to our room, we each chatted on the phone with our families for a bit and then went out to the common area and watched a movie with Toasted Toad, Good N Plenty, Townie, Wing It, and Ishmael, before finally calling it a night.
It’s so nice sleeping in a place with heat!
